Flexible Weighting in an Online Distance Indigenous Social Work Course

Examine how the flexible weighting option responds to the learning needs of Indigenous students by promoting their success, building on their strengths, and giving them a sense of ownership and choice.

Flexible weighting of assignments has been used in online distance education delivery of the Bachelors of Indigenous Social Work program through the School of Indigenous Relations (SIR) at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario since 2015.   Offering online distance education courses poses a number of challenges: Do evaluation scheme practices reflect differing teaching and learning preferences and cultural sensitivities? Are students and faculty satisfied with the assignments? Do assignments accurately reflect a student's learning and skill acquisition? How can assignments be used to engage students more fully without increasing workload for faculty while reducing student stress?

This webinar examines how the flexible weighting option responds to the learning needs of Indigenous students by promoting their success, building on their strengths, and giving them a sense of ownership and choice.
